Most jobs of this kind settle around £100. Two people and a stair climber, because these do not go down stairs alone.
Measure the route before you buy
The width is what catches people out. A standard internal door in a Cardiff terrace is often 762 millimetres, and plenty of these units are wider than that with the doors on. The doors usually come off, which buys you a few centimetres, but that is a job in itself and it needs knowing about in advance.
Measure the front door, the hall, the kitchen doorway and the gap it is going into. If any of those is tight, send us the numbers when you ask rather than hoping.
Standing time, which matters more than people think
If one of these has been laid down or tilted significantly in transit, the compressor oil moves where it should not be. Standing it upright for a few hours before switching it on lets it settle back, and the manufacturers usually say four hours or more.
We carry them upright wherever the route allows, which is most of the time and is the main reason two people and a stair climber is not an upsell. Where a tilt is unavoidable we will tell you, so you know to leave it standing before plugging in.
Before we arrive
Empty it, defrost it overnight and dry out the bottom, because whatever water is left will find your floor. Tape the doors shut or take them off if we have agreed that in advance.
Ice makers and water lines need disconnecting at the plumbing end. If yours is plumbed in, say so when you book.

What moves the number
- Floor and lift access. A third floor walk up in Cathays takes longer than a ground floor flat in Rhiwbina, and time is what the price is made of.
- Where the van can stop. A bay outside is one price, a hundred metre carry from the nearest legal loading point in the city centre is another.
- How much there actually is. Lofts, garages and sheds are where quotes go wrong, so count them in when you tell us.
- Whether it needs two people. Wardrobes, sofa beds, American fridge freezers and pianos usually do.
