Pool or snooker table in Cardiff
£180 to £400
Most jobs of this kind settle around £270. Slate beds come apart and go back together, which is most of the job.
Slate or MDF, and why it matters
A cheaper table with an MDF bed is a two person lift and a straightforward job. A slate bed table is not, and the difference in price between the two is large. If you are not sure which you have, look underneath: slate is grey, cold and obviously stone, and there will be seams where the sections meet.
Tell us which it is when you ask, along with the size. A six foot pub table and a full size snooker table are different days out.
Taking it apart
The cushions come off, then the cloth is released if it has to be, then the slates lift out in sections and are carried individually. Everything gets labelled as it comes off, because the slates go back in the order they came out or the joins never sit right.
The cloth is the fragile part. On an older table it may not survive being taken off and put back, and if it is due for replacement it is usually cheaper to have it recovered at the same time.
Levelling it afterwards
A table that is not level is not worth playing on, and no floor in a Cardiff terrace is level. Rebuilding includes shimming the frame until the bed sits true, which takes as long as it takes.
Give it a few days and check it again. Floors settle under the weight, particularly on a suspended timber floor upstairs, and a small adjustment after a week is normal rather than a sign anything went wrong.
What the price includes
- The van, the fuel and the driver
- A driver who carries, loads and stacks rather than watching you do it
- Blankets, straps and trolley to protect what is being moved
- Loading and unloading at both ends, including stairs
- The parking sorted before the day rather than argued about on it
What moves the number
- Floor and lift access. A third floor walk up in Cathays takes longer than a ground floor flat in Rhiwbina, and time is what the price is made of.
- Where the van can stop. A bay outside is one price, a hundred metre carry from the nearest legal loading point in the city centre is another.
- How much there actually is. Lofts, garages and sheds are where quotes go wrong, so count them in when you tell us.
- Whether it needs two people. Wardrobes, sofa beds, American fridge freezers and pianos usually do.
