We cover CF3 across the St Mellons estate, Willowbrook and Old St Mellons. Moves to Llanrumney or Rumney are a few minutes away; a move into the centre is the long run down Newport Road.
Cardiff Parkway has permission, not a start date
Cardiff Parkway is a new station and business district planned to the south of St Mellons Business Park, just south of the A48(M) and the M4. The council resolved to grant it in April 2022, the Welsh Government called it in that October, and the Welsh Government granted permission at the end of January 2025. The developer describes a 90,000 square metre business district that could support up to 6,000 jobs, with trains reaching the centres of Cardiff and Newport in seven minutes.
What it does not have yet is a start date. In June 2025 the developer said the judicial review period had passed and that the conditions attached to the permission were being assessed, and that is its most recent update. So for anyone moving to St Mellons now, Parkway is a reason to expect change rather than a station to plan around. The permission is described on the developer's Cardiff Parkway approval page.
Newport Road works from 2027
The bigger change for a van is the road. The council's Cardiff to Newport sustainable transport corridor begins with a first phase delivering a new cycleway from the city centre to Cypress Drive in St Mellons and the county boundary, with bus priority alongside. Phase 1a runs from the city centre to the West Grove junction, and the council expects construction to start in early 2027 and finish by summer 2028.
Newport Road is already the main route between St Mellons and town. A move booked for 2027 or 2028 should expect lane changes and slower journeys somewhere along it, so we will check the works on the week rather than trusting a route that worked last year. The council set out the timetable in its corridor announcement.
- Now: Newport Road as it is, busiest at the peaks.
- Early 2027 to summer 2028: phase 1a works between the centre and West Grove.
- Later phases: the corridor continues out to Cypress Drive and the boundary.
Llys Y Goetre and moving later in life
On 27 January 2026 the council opened Llys Y Goetre on Crickhowell Road: 60 one and two bedroom council apartments for older people, built by Lovell with £12.7 million of Welsh Government Social Housing Grant.
A move from a family house into a one or two bedroom apartment is mostly a decision about what fits. The furniture that goes needs measuring against the new rooms, and what stays behind needs somewhere to go. We do both halves: the move into the flat and, where it is wanted, clearing what is left at the old address, so a family does not have to empty a house over several weekends.
What a St Mellons move costs
A one bedroom flat usually lands between £180 to £300, and a three bedroom house between £390 to £650. Open ended jobs can go on the hourly rate instead, £45 for one person and a van or £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum.
St Mellons is the far east of the city, so a move into town carries a real drive along Newport Road, and a move within CF3 does not. Every band we quote from is published rather than given over the phone.
