Man and van prices in Cardiff

Most man and van sites will not put a number on anything, which is not much help when you are trying to work out whether a move is a hundred pounds or five hundred. The tables below are what jobs of each size actually cost in Cardiff, so you can plan before you ask anyone for a quote.

They are ranges rather than quotes, and they are honest about why. What you pay turns on the access at both ends, where the van can stop and how much there really is once the loft and the garage are counted. Tell us those three things and the figure we give you is fixed before we start.

Single item prices

One thing moved, collected or taken away. The specialist pieces sit above the rest because they need more people and more kit, not because they travel further.

Rubbish removal and clearance prices

Waste work is priced by how much of the van you fill and what it costs to dispose of, rather than by the number of rooms.

What every price includes

  • The van, the fuel and the driver
  • A driver who carries, loads and stacks rather than watching you do it
  • Blankets, straps and trolley to protect what is being moved
  • Loading and unloading at both ends, including stairs
  • The parking sorted before the day rather than argued about on it

What changes the price

  • Floor and lift access. A third floor walk up in Cathays takes longer than a ground floor flat in Rhiwbina, and time is what the price is made of.
  • Where the van can stop. A bay outside is one price, a hundred metre carry from the nearest legal loading point in the city centre is another.
  • How much there actually is. Lofts, garages and sheds are where quotes go wrong, so count them in when you tell us.
  • Whether it needs two people. Wardrobes, sofa beds, American fridge freezers and pianos usually do.
  • Dismantling and reassembly, if flat pack furniture has to come apart to get out of the room.
  • The date. Fridays, month ends and the September student weekends in Cathays are the busiest slots in Cardiff.
  • Distance beyond the city. Anywhere along the M4 corridor stays a local job, further afield is priced as long distance.

Fixed price, not a meter

For a job with a known shape, which is nearly all of them, we quote one fixed figure for the whole thing. It is agreed before we pull away and it does not move because a wardrobe took an extra twenty minutes on a landing in Roath. You are not paying for our traffic or our tea break.

Where a job genuinely cannot be pinned down, clearing a garage nobody has measured or ferrying between two addresses over an afternoon, we will offer an hourly rate instead: £45 an hour for one person and a van, £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum. We will tell you which way round is cheaper for your job rather than picking the one that suits us.

How this compares to a removals firm

A full removals company in Cardiff averages around £557 for a one to two bedroom move and about £893 for a three bed, according to comparemymove Cardiff removal cost data. The equivalent man and van job sits well below both.

The difference is what you are buying. A removals firm sends a surveyor, a four person crew and a packing service. For a flat or a small house most of that is capacity you will not use. Where a removals firm earns its money is on large houses, long distances and moves where somebody else packing every plate is genuinely worth paying for.

Getting an accurate number quickly

Four things get you a price that holds: the collection postcode, the destination postcode, the floor and access at both ends, and a rough list of what is moving including the loft, the shed and the garage. A photo of the room or the pile is worth more than any description.

Send those over and we come back within the hour with one figure. There is no survey to book and no obligation attached to asking.

Moving out of Cardiff

Long distance is priced on the load plus the mileage, because the van comes back empty. The routes we run most each have their own figures: London, Bristol, Swansea, Newport, Birmingham, Manchester and Bath. See all routes.

The small print, in plain words

  • These are indicative ranges for planning, not quotes. The figure we give you is fixed before we start and does not change on the day.
  • Prices assume one trip with standard access at both ends. If we think yours needs two runs or a second crew member, we say so when we quote rather than after.
  • Long distance moves are priced on the load plus the mileage, because the van comes back empty. The routes we run most have published figures of their own, and anywhere else is quoted directly.

Prices across Cardiff

The same rates apply right across the city and the immediate catchment, including Cardiff City Centre, Cathays, Roath, Canton, Grangetown, Splott, Llanishen, Whitchurch. See all areas we cover, or browse the services.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a man and van cost in Cardiff?+

It depends on the size of the job. A single item collected and delivered across the city runs £45 to £85, a one bedroom flat move £180 to £300, and a three bedroom house £390 to £650. Where you land in a range comes down to floor access, parking and how much has been packed before the day.

Do you charge by the hour or a fixed price?+

A fixed price for the job in nearly all cases, agreed before we start, with no hourly meter. For open ended work we can charge by the hour instead, at £45 for one person and £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum.

Is a man and van cheaper than a removals company?+

For flats and small houses, clearly. Cardiff removals firms average about £557 for a one to two bed and £893 for a three bed. The same jobs done as man and van work sit well under those figures, because you are paying for a van and the lifting rather than a survey and a large crew.

What is included in the price?+

The van, the fuel, a driver who does the carrying, blankets and straps, goods in transit cover, and loading and unloading at both ends including stairs. Nothing on that list is charged separately.

Will the price change on the day?+

No, not unless what we find is materially different from what you described, and in that case we tell you before we load rather than after. The quote is the figure you pay.

Do you charge more at weekends or short notice?+

The rate is the same seven days a week. Fridays, month ends and the September student weekends fill up first in Cardiff, so the constraint on those dates is availability rather than price.

How much does it cost to move out of Cardiff?+

It is the figure for your size of load plus the mileage for the route, because the van makes the journey twice and returns empty. London, Bristol, Swansea, Newport, Birmingham, Manchester and Bath each have published prices, and anywhere else is quoted directly.
