Man and Van in Thornhill

Thornhill is the settled side of north Cardiff. It has a station car park with 80 free spaces, trains into town every ten minutes, and a main road that carries the city's only crematorium.

We cover CF14 from the streets off Thornhill Road across to Cherry Orchard Road and the station. The building work in this corner of the city is over the road in Lisvane, so most Thornhill moves are between established homes, out to Llanishen and Rhiwbina or into the centre.

A station with somewhere to park

Lisvane and Thornhill station was built in 1986 to replace Cefn Onn Halt, and Transport for Wales gives its address as Cherry Orchard Road, Thornhill. Its car park has 80 free spaces, 5 of them accessible. There are 10 cycle spaces on five Sheffield stands beside the path to the Cardiff platform, covered by CCTV but not sheltered.

The station is unstaffed and the ticket machine takes cards only. The Rhymney-bound platform is reached by a steep ramp; the Cardiff-bound platform has a shallow ramp in from Clos Llysfaen. Cardiff Bus routes 85 and 86 call there. TfW lists the facilities on its Lisvane and Thornhill station page.

That car park is the difference from the western suburbs. In Fairwater and Danescourt the station has no car park at all, so the helpers' cars go on the street with the van. Here there is somewhere else for them to stand while the van has the kerb, early in the day before commuters fill it.

Fifteen minutes to Cardiff Central

On TfW's September 2026 timetable the Rhymney line calls here six times an hour Monday to Saturday through the day, and twice an hour on Sundays. The run to Cardiff Central takes about 15 minutes.

On a moving day that turns the keys problem into a short errand. If the agent is in town, somebody can take the train in, collect the keys and be back before the van is loaded, without taking a car off the drive the van needs.

Thornhill Road and the crematorium

The A469 Thornhill Road is the main road in and out, and it carries more than commuters. Thornhill Crematorium, the only one in the city, handles around 3,000 funerals a year, which works out at roughly a dozen every working day. The council has described Cardiff as the only UK Core City of a similar size with a single crematorium.

Thornhill Cemetery sits alongside it. It opened in 1952, was extended in 2010 and covers 45 acres, and the council says it cannot grow further because it is bordered by housing and roads. Further north on Thornhill Road, past the M4, Cardiff Northern Cemetery opened in October 2021 with burial space for the next 15 years and more.

In March 2026 the council proposed a second crematorium near junction 30 of the M4, designed to complement rather than replace Thornhill, which would keep operating. Until anything changes, a move on or near Thornhill Road is timed around corteges, not through them. The proposal is set out in the council's crematorium announcement.

What a Thornhill move costs

A room's worth of boxes and a few bits lands between £85 to £150, and a three bedroom house between £390 to £650. Open ended jobs can go on the hourly rate instead, £45 for one person and a van or £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum.

With no permit to buy and the drive into town short, the cost of a Thornhill move is mostly the carry. A whole house move out of an established home is the usual job here. Every band we quote from is published rather than given over the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking at Lisvane and Thornhill station?+

Yes. The car park on Cherry Orchard Road has 80 free spaces, 5 of them accessible, and there are 10 cycle spaces on five Sheffield stands covered by CCTV.

How often do trains run from Thornhill into Cardiff?+

On TfW's September 2026 timetable there are six trains an hour Monday to Saturday through the day and two an hour on Sundays, taking about 15 minutes to Cardiff Central.

Does a funeral at Thornhill affect a move on Thornhill Road?+

It can. The crematorium handles around 3,000 funerals a year, roughly a dozen every working day, so the main road and the gates see a steady flow of corteges and mourners' cars. We plan a Thornhill Road move around it rather than through it.

Is Thornhill in the council's parking plan?+

It is not named in the council's releases on the City Parking Plan, which put the inner terraced areas first. There is no residents' scheme to arrange for a move.

Is new housing being built in Thornhill?+

The large new estates in this corner of the city, Churchlands and Longwood Grange, are on the Lisvane side of Cherry Orchard Road rather than in Thornhill.

How much is a man and van in Thornhill?+

A room of boxes and a few bits runs between £85 to £150, and a three bedroom house between £390 to £650. Thornhill to Llanishen or the centre is a short run.
