Why the summer gap opens up
Hall contracts in Cardiff end in early summer and the next place rarely starts the day after. At Cardiff University the 40 week contract ends on Wednesday 30 June 2027 and the 39 week contract on Monday 21 June, and the university is clear that you need to move out of your room at the end of your contract period. Cardiff Met's halls run on 42, 43 or 44 week contracts, and anyone who wants to leave earlier has to find somewhere else to live.
At the University of South Wales the summer term ends on 28 May 2027, while its Cardiff partner blocks let rooms on contracts that run beyond that. Put any of those end dates next to a house share that starts in September and there are two or three months with a room of belongings and nowhere to put it. Each university has its own page with the detail, for Cardiff University, Cardiff Met and the University of South Wales.
Wales has its own renting law
House shares in Cardiff are covered by the Renting Homes (Wales) Act 2016, which came into force on 1 December 2022, not by the English rules. Tenancies became occupation contracts, tenants became contract-holders, and a landlord has to give a written statement of the contract within 14 days of the move in. England's newer tenancy reforms, which turned fixed term tenancies there into rolling ones, do not change how a Cardiff student contract works.
The practical point for storage is the end date. You will not normally be able to end a fixed term standard contract early, so the dates you signed are the dates you have, and a gap between one house contract ending and the next one starting is fixed from the day you sign. On a periodic contract the minimum notice you give is four weeks. The Welsh Government sets out the rules in its renting homes guidance for tenants.
Full year contracts still move rooms
Students on a full year contract are not always spared a move. Cardiff University says students with a full year contract may be encouraged to move to another room as near as possible within the same residential area, usually in June or July, while essential maintenance is carried out. Its full year contract for 2026/27 runs to 17 September 2027.
A room to room move inside the same residence is short, but it lands in the same weeks as everyone else's move out. If you are told it is happening, book it as early as you would a move out. The dates for every contract type are on the university's contract periods page.
A storage unit or a box service
There are two ways to store a student room. A box service collects packed boxes and charges by the week, which suits a suitcase and a handful of boxes going home for the summer. A self storage unit and a van suits anyone with a desk, a bike, a chest of drawers or a whole house of housemates sharing one unit and splitting its cost.
Self storage sites close to the student areas include branches on Davis Street, CF24 2FU, a short run from Adamsdown and the USW campus, and on Newport Road, CF23 9AE, on the Roath side of the city. Choose the site nearest where you will live in September rather than where you are leaving, because the return leg happens in the busiest moving week of the year.
What to ask the storage site first
Before booking a unit, find out the access hours, whether they differ at weekends, how close the loading bay is to the unit, whether trolleys are provided and whether an upper floor unit needs a lift booking. Ask what size unit fits a single room and what fits a four person house, and whether someone else can collect if you have already gone home.
Send us the answers with your quote request. We plan the timing so the van arrives inside the access hours with the load packed in the order it goes in, which keeps both legs short.
Sharing a unit with housemates
The cheapest student storage in Cardiff is usually one unit shared by a house. We collect from each room on one run, load the unit together, and on the way back in September drop everything at the new house in one go. Label boxes with names before the first leg, because three months is long enough for everyone to forget whose kettle is whose.
If housemates are spread across Cathays, Roath and the halls, tell us all the pickup addresses at once and we will plan a single route. The general version of this service is our student moves page.
