Same-Day Man and Van in Cardiff

Same-day work comes down to two questions: is a van free today, and is there somewhere legal to stop at both ends.

What we need to know straight away

We answer the first question as soon as you ask, and plan the second before we set off. Most same-day jobs in Cardiff are small and quick: a sofa bought this morning, a room that has to be out by tonight, a delivery that fell through. We will not promise a slot before we have looked at the day's runs, but a single item or a flat is often something we can fit in.

Send both postcodes, what is moving, and the floor at each end. That is enough for us to say yes or no and roughly when. The more precisely the load is described, the better the chance of slotting it into a gap between booked jobs.

Tell us any hard deadline as well, such as a checkout time, a tip closing time or a landlord meeting you at five. A same-day job is built around the tightest constraint in it, and we would rather plan for it than discover it at the door.

The parking zones decide the timing

Much of Cathays, Roath and the streets near the universities sit inside a parking zone. Cardiff Council's rule is that there is no uncontrolled parking at all between 8am and 6pm in those zones. Resident bays are for permit holders, have no time limit and run from 8am to 10pm every day. Limited waiting bays allow a maximum of two hours without a resident permit and operate from 8am to 6pm every day.

That shapes a same-day job more than traffic does. A van can still stop to load, but it cannot sit in a resident bay while everything is carried out at a leisurely pace. We load in one continuous run and move on, and where the street is impossible we work out the nearest legal stopping point before we arrive.

Loading has to be genuine and continuous

Waiting restrictions in Wales usually exempt loading and unloading, which is what lets a van stop on a yellow line while a move is under way. The Welsh Government's enforcement guidance is clear that the loading has to be continuous, and that civil enforcement officers use observation to check. Under continuous observation an officer will watch a vehicle for a set period, usually at least five minutes, and issue a ticket if there is no sign of loading.

In practice that means the van stays busy. Boxes stacked by the door before we arrive, a clear route through the hall, and someone able to point at which things are going all keep the job moving and keep the van legal.

What a ticket costs in Cardiff

Cardiff Council issues a penalty charge notice of £50 or £70 depending on the circumstances, and its mobile civil enforcement teams work known trouble spots across the city. Police can also ticket vehicles on zigzags or causing an obstruction.

A fine is cheaper than a wasted booking but it is entirely avoidable. Every same-day job we take starts with a look at where the van will stand. The council sets out its enforcement on the Keeping Cardiff Moving parking pages, and the Welsh Government's enforcement guidance explains how loading is judged.

Event days change everything

Cardiff closes its centre for stadium events, concerts and races more often than most cities its size, and those closures are announced in advance rather than sprung on the day. A same-day job that crosses the centre during a closure is a different job: longer, slower and sometimes impossible at the time you wanted.

If your move falls on an event day, say so when you ask. We will either work around the closure times or tell you honestly that early morning is the only sensible window. It is the one thing about Cardiff that no amount of local knowledge can shortcut.

What suits a same-day van

Small jobs slot into a day far more easily than big ones. A single item, a marketplace pickup, a studio or a student room can often be done at short notice. A full house needs most of a day and two people, so the chance of doing it today is much lower, though it is always worth asking.

Single items are priced on their own page under furniture and single items, and if the reason for the rush is a contract ending, our student storage moves page covers moving things into storage at short notice.

A good share of same-day calls come from a firm that never arrived. Removal company not turned up in Cardiff covers your rights and what to do in the first hour.

Prices for a same-day job

Same-day work is priced the same way as anything else: by the size of the load, the access and the distance, agreed before we start. A single item usually lands between £45 to £85, a few items between £85 to £150 and a studio or single room between £130 to £220.

There is no surcharge for asking today. What changes the price is the job, not the urgency. The full list is on our prices page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you guarantee a van today?+

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. It depends on how the day's runs fall. Send both postcodes and what is moving and we will tell you straight away whether a van is free and roughly when.

Can a van park on my street while it loads?+

Usually yes, because waiting restrictions in Wales normally exempt genuine loading. It has to be continuous, and enforcement officers may watch a vehicle for at least five minutes before issuing a ticket.

What are the parking zone hours in Cardiff?+

In a controlled zone there is no uncontrolled parking between 8am and 6pm. Resident bays run 8am to 10pm every day with no time limit, and limited waiting bays run 8am to 6pm with a two hour maximum without a permit.

What is a parking fine in Cardiff?+

Cardiff Council issues a penalty charge notice of £50 or £70 depending on the circumstances.

Will a stadium event stop my move?+

It can. City centre roads close for events, so tell us the date and we will plan around the closure times or suggest an early start.

Do you charge more for same-day work?+

No. The price is set by the load, the access and the distance, not by how soon you need it.
