Cardiff to Newport
£150 to £940
12 miles, around twenty-five minutes each way. The figure depends entirely on the size of the load, and the table below breaks it down.
What it costs by size of load
Local prices for each size of move, plus the mileage for this route. The same figures apply in the other direction, because the van makes both legs either way.
| Job | What it covers | Indicative price |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or bedsit | A single room of furniture and boxes, one van, one trip. | £150 to £260 |
| One bedroom flat | Bed, sofa, wardrobe, white goods and the boxes that come with them. | £200 to £340 |
| Two bedroom flat or house | Two bedrooms of furniture plus a living room and kitchen, usually a full van. | £280 to £470 |
| Three bedroom house | A family house, often a large van or two runs depending on the loft and garage. | £410 to £690 |
| Four bedroom house | A big load with a second crew member, and nearly always more than one trip. | £570 to £940 |
Why this is not a long distance price
The mileage part of any long distance quote pays for the empty return leg. On this route that leg is twenty-five minutes, so the difference between a Newport move and a move across Cardiff is small and the price reflects that.
Compare the table on this page with the local price list and the gap is modest. If someone quotes you a full long distance rate for twelve miles, ask them to explain it.
The A48 or the M4
Both work. The M4 is faster when it is moving and miserable when it is not, particularly around the Brynglas tunnels, which are the one genuine bottleneck on this route. The A48 through Castleton is slower on paper and often quicker in practice at the wrong time of day.
We take whichever suits the time of day rather than always defaulting to the motorway. It is a short enough trip that the choice actually matters.
The eastern side of Cardiff
If you are moving from Rumney, Llanrumney, St Mellons or Trowbridge you are already most of the way there, and these jobs are quicker and cheaper again. Our area pages for the eastern side of the city cover the local end of it.
Going the other way, plenty of people move into Cardiff from Newport for work or study. Same route, same price, and the same advice about telling us the street you are landing on.
What the price includes
- The van, the fuel and the driver
- A driver who carries, loads and stacks rather than watching you do it
- Blankets, straps and trolley to protect what is being moved
- Loading and unloading at both ends, including stairs
- The parking sorted before the day rather than argued about on it
Third-party charges such as clean air zones or parking permits are not included unless we say so in your quote. Ask, and it will be stated either way.
