Piano moving in Cardiff

An upright piano weighs somewhere between 200 and 350 kilos, most of it high up and none of it evenly distributed. It is the one household item where getting it wrong damages the floor, the doorframe, the piano and somebody's back, usually in that order.

We move uprights across Cardiff with three people and the proper kit. What we do not do is pretend a grand or a concert instrument is the same job, and we will point you at a specialist rather than take work we should not.

Upright piano in Cardiff

£150 to £350

Most jobs of this kind settle around £240. Three people, proper kit and a planned route out of the room.

What we need to know before we quote

The make and rough age, because an old overstrung upright is a great deal heavier than it looks. The floor it is on and what the stairs are like. Whether there are steps up to the front door, which matters more than the ones inside. And whether the room it is going into can actually take it, which is worth checking on an upper floor of a conversion.

Photos of the piano, the hallway and the front approach get you a firm price. A description on its own usually does not.

Cardiff houses and the stairs problem

The city has a lot of Victorian terraces with a turn halfway up the stairs, and that turn is the thing that decides whether a piano can go to a first floor room at all. In Roath, Cathays and Riverside we would rather look at it first than promise on the phone.

The larger period houses in Llandaff, Pontcanna and Penarth usually have the width but often have steps up to the door and a tiled hall that will not forgive a dropped corner. Both get planned rather than improvised.

Afterwards

A piano needs to settle before it is tuned, usually a couple of weeks in its new room, so book the tuner for after that rather than the same week. Moving one always knocks it out, however carefully it is carried.

Keep it off an outside wall and away from a radiator if you can. It is the same advice a tuner would give you and it costs nothing to follow on the day.

What the price includes

  • The van, the fuel and the driver
  • A driver who carries, loads and stacks rather than watching you do it
  • Blankets, straps and trolley to protect what is being moved
  • Loading and unloading at both ends, including stairs
  • The parking sorted before the day rather than argued about on it

What moves the number

  • Floor and lift access. A third floor walk up in Cathays takes longer than a ground floor flat in Rhiwbina, and time is what the price is made of.
  • Where the van can stop. A bay outside is one price, a hundred metre carry from the nearest legal loading point in the city centre is another.
  • How much there actually is. Lofts, garages and sheds are where quotes go wrong, so count them in when you tell us.
  • Whether it needs two people. Wardrobes, sofa beds, American fridge freezers and pianos usually do.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to move a piano in Cardiff?+

An upright moved locally falls within the range on this page. Stairs at either end and steps up to the door are what push it towards the upper figure.

Do you move grand pianos?+

No. A grand needs the legs and lyre removed and a proper piano board, and that is specialist work. We will say so rather than attempt it.

Can you get a piano up to a first floor flat?+

Sometimes, and sometimes not. It depends on the turn in the stairs. We would rather look at it before promising than find out on the day.

Will it need retuning?+

Almost certainly. Let it settle in the new room for a couple of weeks first, then book the tuner.

Is the piano insured while you move it?+

Ask for the cover position in writing before you book, from us or anyone else. It is the one item where it is worth being specific rather than assuming.
