We cover CF3 from the estate around Countisbury Avenue and Ball Road out to the Rhymney. Llanrumney is its own community, separate from Rumney to the south, though a move between the two is a few minutes in the van.
Newport Road is the way into town
In October 2022 the council put it plainly: all commuter traffic heading towards the city centre from the wards of Llanrumney, Rumney, Trowbridge and to an extent St Mellons has to use Newport Road, which sees significant congestion during peak periods.
For a move that means the clock matters more than the mileage. A van leaving Llanrumney at 8am joins the same queue as everyone else heading in, and a van coming back loaded at 5pm meets it again going the other way. We start a Llanrumney job after the morning peak and aim to have the last load in before the evening one, so the hourly cost goes on carrying rather than sitting on Newport Road.
- Start after the morning rush, not before it.
- Plan the last load in before the evening peak on Newport Road.
- A move within CF3 avoids Newport Road entirely and is the quickest job here.
The A48 bridge and the homes that pay for it
The fix the council chose is a new bridge and road over the River Rhymney, giving Llanrumney a direct link to the park and ride and to the A48 at the Pentwyn junction, with a dedicated bus lane and a two-way cycleway. To pay for it the council is selling land, and the scheme brings 170 new homes on land off Ball Road and Ball Lane, approximately 80 of them council houses.
Cabinet approved a legal contract with the developer to build the bridge and link road, subject to an independent valuation, and the council set the scheme out again in October 2022. It has published nothing on the bridge since. Until it opens, Newport Road is the route, and we plan every Llanrumney move on that basis. The scheme is set out in the council's bridge and homes announcement.
New council homes off Ball Road and the old depot
Llanrumney has had several Cardiff Living council housing schemes. At Mount Pleasant Lane, Wates built 31 homes on the site of the former Llanrumney Depot, all for affordable rent or purchase through the council: 21 two-bed houses, four one-bed apartments and six two-bed apartments. At Captain's View and Captain's Walk it built 40 affordable homes and 66 for open-market sale. The homes off Ball Road and Ball Lane will add to that.
If a new home comes with a start date that leaves no time to book a firm weeks ahead, a same-day man and van is the backstop. The programme is described in the council's Cardiff Living update.
What a Llanrumney move costs
A room's worth of boxes and a few bits lands between £85 to £150, and a three bedroom house between £390 to £650. Open ended jobs can go on the hourly rate instead, £45 for one person and a van or £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum.
On the hourly rate the Newport Road timing is the biggest thing you control, because an hour in traffic is paid for like an hour of carrying. Every band we quote from is published rather than given over the phone.
