Cardiff to London
£400 to £1,350
150 miles, about three hours each way. The figure depends entirely on the size of the load, and the table below breaks it down.
What it costs by size of load
Local prices for each size of move, plus the mileage for this route. The same figures apply in the other direction, because the van makes both legs either way.
| Job | What it covers | Indicative price |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or bedsit | A single room of furniture and boxes, one van, one trip. | £400 to £670 |
| One bedroom flat | Bed, sofa, wardrobe, white goods and the boxes that come with them. | £450 to £750 |
| Two bedroom flat or house | Two bedrooms of furniture plus a living room and kitchen, usually a full van. | £530 to £880 |
| Three bedroom house | A family house, often a large van or two runs depending on the loft and garage. | £660 to £1,100 |
| Four bedroom house | A big load with a second crew member, and nearly always more than one trip. | £820 to £1,350 |
Parking at the London end
Most inner London streets are controlled parking zones, and a van cannot simply stop outside for two hours. Some boroughs let you suspend a bay or buy a temporary permit for a move, some do not, and the ones that do want several working days of notice. It is the single thing most likely to go wrong on a London move, and it is entirely avoidable.
Find out which borough you are moving into and check their removals permit rules as soon as you have a date. If you are going into a managed block, ask about the loading bay and the lift booking at the same time.
The charges, and who pays them
London has a low emission zone covering every borough, with a daily charge for vehicles that do not meet the standard, and central London adds the congestion charge on weekdays and weekend afternoons. Both land on the job rather than disappearing.
Ask whoever moves you whether their van is compliant and whether any charge is inside the quoted price or added afterwards. A quote that does not mention it is one to query rather than accept.
How the day runs
For a one bed or a studio it is a single day: load in Cardiff in the morning, drive, unload in the afternoon. For a three bed it is a long day and sometimes two, particularly if there are stairs at both ends.
Going the other way is the same job at the same price. Plenty of these are people leaving London for Cardiff, and the van has to make the return trip either way, which is what the mileage part of the price actually covers.
What the price includes
- The van, the fuel and the driver
- A driver who carries, loads and stacks rather than watching you do it
- Blankets, straps and trolley to protect what is being moved
- Loading and unloading at both ends, including stairs
- The parking sorted before the day rather than argued about on it
Third-party charges such as clean air zones or parking permits are not included unless we say so in your quote. Ask, and it will be stated either way.
