Sofa or armchair in Cardiff
£45 to £95
Most jobs of this kind settle around £65. Collected and delivered across the city, or taken away for disposal.
Measure the doorway, not the sofa
The thing that goes wrong is almost never the weight. It is a three seater that came into a Roath terrace before the hall was reconfigured, or a corner unit bought for a Cardiff Bay flat where the lift is smaller than the sofa. Measure the narrowest point on the route, which is usually a door frame or the turn at the top of the stairs, and measure the sofa across its deepest part.
If the numbers are close, tell us. Feet come off most sofas, some backs unbolt, and knowing that in advance is the difference between a twenty minute job and a wasted trip.
Buying one secondhand
Most of these jobs start on Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree with a listing that says collection only and a seller who wants it gone this weekend. We will go to them, load it and bring it to you, so a bargain in Caerphilly does not become a problem you solve with a borrowed estate car.
Ask the seller for the dimensions and a photo of the sofa in the room before you commit. It costs nothing and it is the check almost nobody makes.
Getting rid of the old one
Cardiff Council will take a sofa through its bulky waste collection, and if you can get it to the kerb and wait for a slot that is the cheaper route. We will tell you so rather than talk you out of it.
Where we are worth paying for is when it has to come down from a first floor flat, when it has to go this week, or when it is going out at the same time as the new one is coming in. Upholstered furniture has to be handled separately at the tip because of the fire regulations, which is part of why disposal costs what it does.
What the price includes
- The van, the fuel and the driver
- A driver who carries, loads and stacks rather than watching you do it
- Blankets, straps and trolley to protect what is being moved
- Loading and unloading at both ends, including stairs
- The parking sorted before the day rather than argued about on it
What moves the number
- Floor and lift access. A third floor walk up in Cathays takes longer than a ground floor flat in Rhiwbina, and time is what the price is made of.
- Where the van can stop. A bay outside is one price, a hundred metre carry from the nearest legal loading point in the city centre is another.
- How much there actually is. Lofts, garages and sheds are where quotes go wrong, so count them in when you tell us.
- Whether it needs two people. Wardrobes, sofa beds, American fridge freezers and pianos usually do.
