What it costs to move a single item in Cardiff

Moving one thing is the job people most often assume is not worth booking, and it is the one we do most. A sofa bought off Marketplace in Ely, a fridge handed down by a relative in Llanrumney, a wardrobe that has to get from a third floor flat in Cathays to a house in Whitchurch: all of it is a single item collection, and all of it is priced as one short job rather than a fraction of a removal.

The cost turns on the carry rather than the object. A washing machine wheeled straight out of a ground floor kitchen in Rhiwbina is quick. The same machine down two flights of Victorian stairs in Roath with the van parked round the corner is not, and the price reflects that honestly rather than surprising you at the door.

Single item in Cardiff

£45 to £85

Most jobs of this size settle around £60. One sofa, bed, fridge or wardrobe collected and delivered across the city.

Why one item is not priced by the hour

A single item job is mostly travel and carrying, and both are known before we set off. That is why we quote it as one fixed figure rather than starting a meter that punishes you for a slow lift or a tight stairwell. You know what it costs when you book, and the number does not move because the sofa took an extra ten minutes to turn on the landing.

Where a job genuinely cannot be pinned down, a clearance where nobody knows how much is in the garage, we will offer an hourly rate instead and say so plainly. For one item that almost never applies.

What makes a single item cost more

Two people rather than one is the biggest jump. Sofa beds, American fridge freezers, corner units, cast iron baths and anything that has to come apart to leave the room all need a second pair of hands, and that is the difference between the bottom and the top of the range.

After that it is access at both ends. A flat in one of the Cardiff Bay blocks where the lift has to be booked, a terrace off Crwys Road with no loading bay, or a house up one of the steeper Penarth streets all add time. Tell us the floor, the stairs and where the van can stop and the quote will be right first time.

Buying secondhand and getting it home

A large share of these jobs start on Facebook Marketplace, eBay or Gumtree, where the seller wants it gone this week and the listing says collection only. We will go to the seller, load it, and bring it to you, so a bargain sofa in Barry does not turn into a problem you have to solve with a borrowed estate car.

If you are buying, ask the seller for the dimensions and whether it comes apart before you commit. It costs nothing to check and it is the single thing that most often turns an easy collection into an awkward one.

What the price includes

  • The van, the fuel and the driver
  • A driver who carries, loads and stacks rather than watching you do it
  • Blankets, straps and trolley to protect what is being moved
  • Loading and unloading at both ends, including stairs
  • The parking sorted before the day rather than argued about on it

What moves the number

  • Floor and lift access. A third floor walk up in Cathays takes longer than a ground floor flat in Rhiwbina, and time is what the price is made of.
  • Where the van can stop. A bay outside is one price, a hundred metre carry from the nearest legal loading point in the city centre is another.
  • How much there actually is. Lofts, garages and sheds are where quotes go wrong, so count them in when you tell us.
  • Whether it needs two people. Wardrobes, sofa beds, American fridge freezers and pianos usually do.
  • Dismantling and reassembly, if flat pack furniture has to come apart to get out of the room.

These are indicative ranges for planning, not quotes. The figure we give you is fixed before we start and does not change on the day. See all man and van prices in Cardiff.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum charge for one item?+

Yes, in effect. A single item is the smallest job we price, and the bottom of the range is what a short local collection with easy access at both ends costs.

Can you collect from a seller and deliver to me on the same run?+

That is the normal shape for these jobs. Give us both addresses and the item, and the price covers the whole run rather than two separate trips.

Will you take it upstairs?+

Yes. Stairs are part of the job and are priced in, so tell us the floor at both ends when you ask and there is nothing to settle on the day.

Do you dismantle furniture if it will not fit through the door?+

We can, for most flat pack and bed frames. Say so when you book, because it needs the right time and tools allowed for rather than being sprung on us.

What if the item turns out to be bigger than I said?+

We will still move it if it fits the van, and we will tell you before we load if the price needs to change. Nothing gets added quietly after the fact.
