Man and van from Cardiff to Bristol

Cardiff to Bristol is the shortest of the proper long distance routes and the busiest. Forty-five miles over the Severn, under an hour in decent traffic, and close enough that a flat move is a comfortable single day with time to spare.

People move between these two cities constantly, for work more than anything, and it is common enough that a smaller job can sometimes be fitted around another run rather than priced as a whole day out.

Cardiff to Bristol

£210 to £1,040

45 miles, under an hour each way. The figure depends entirely on the size of the load, and the table below breaks it down.

What it costs by size of load

Local prices for each size of move, plus the mileage for this route. The same figures apply in the other direction, because the van makes both legs either way.

The bridge, and the toll that is not there any more

The tolls on both Severn crossings were scrapped at the end of 2018, so nobody should be adding one to your quote. It still comes up, usually from people who have not made the trip in years, and it is worth knowing before you compare prices.

The M4 crossing is the default. The older M48 bridge is the better option when the M4 is closed or the wind is up, since high winds do occasionally shut one or both to high-sided vehicles, which is worth a thought if your date is in January rather than June.

The Bristol end

Bristol runs a clean air zone covering the centre, with a daily charge for vehicles that do not meet the standard. If you are moving into the middle of the city rather than out towards Bishopston or Bedminster, ask whether the van is compliant and whether any charge sits inside the quote.

The city also has a lot of Georgian and Victorian conversions with the same narrow staircases as Cardiff, and hills that are considerably steeper. Clifton and Totterdown in particular are worth mentioning when you ask for a price.

Why this one is cheaper than it looks

The mileage part of a long distance price covers the return leg, because the van comes back empty. At forty-five miles that return is under an hour, which is why a Bristol move sits so much closer to a local Cardiff price than a London one does.

It also means a Bristol job can often be done at short notice. There is no overnight to arrange and no need to write off a whole day either side.

What the price includes

  • The van, the fuel and the driver
  • A driver who carries, loads and stacks rather than watching you do it
  • Blankets, straps and trolley to protect what is being moved
  • Loading and unloading at both ends, including stairs
  • The parking sorted before the day rather than argued about on it

Third-party charges such as clean air zones or parking permits are not included unless we say so in your quote. Ask, and it will be stated either way.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Cardiff to Bristol move cost?+

The table on this page has a range for each size of load. It sits close to a local Cardiff price because the return leg is short.

Is there still a toll on the Severn bridge?+

No. Tolls on both crossings were abolished at the end of 2018. Nobody should be adding one to your quote.

What happens if the bridge closes?+

High winds occasionally close a crossing to high-sided vehicles. The M48 and M4 bridges rarely shut together, and the long way round through Gloucester exists if they do.

Do you go into the Bristol clean air zone?+

Ask when you book whether the van is compliant and whether any charge is included. It only applies to the central zone, not the wider city.

Can it be done at short notice?+

Often, yes. It is close enough that it does not need a whole day set aside, which makes it easier to fit into a busy week.
