The College sits in the Castle Grounds at Cathays Park, CF10 3ER, inside Bute Park, with the Richard Burton Theatre, the Bute Theatre, the Caird Studio and the Dora Stoutzker Hall. There are Pay and Display car parks opposite, and three accessible spaces outside the main entrance for blue badge holders, but nothing else on site.
Its autumn term also starts on 21 September 2026, two days before Cardiff University residence contracts begin. If you are renting privately in Cathays or Roath, that means moving in the quiet window before the university crowd arrives, which is the easiest week of the month to get a van.

A campus with nowhere to park
Most Cardiff student moves end at a hall with a loading bay or a temporary unloading space. RWCMD has neither. The College states plainly that there are Pay and Display car parks opposite but no on-site parking, and asks visitors to allow extra time to find a space. The three accessible spaces by the main entrance are for blue badge holders and cannot be reserved.
For a move that is usually fine, because almost nothing needs delivering to the College itself. What it does mean is that if you are bringing an instrument or a set in, the van stops on the public side and someone carries from there. Tell us what is going in and we will plan the stop. The College sets out the current position on its how to find us page.
Severn Point and the 43 week contract
Severn Point is the College's own hall, managed by Unite Students, about a twelve minute walk away in the city centre. Rooms are en-suite, arranged in flats of six, and every first year who applies before the deadline is guaranteed one, including international and postgraduate students. The College is firm that you apply through it rather than to Unite directly.
The College also advises taking the 43 week contract so the room is yours over the Christmas and Easter vacations and you do not have to move your belongings home. For a performance student with instruments, scores and kit, that advice matters more than it does for most courses: the alternative is two extra moves a year.
- A 43 week contract means one move in and one move out, not three round trips.
- Flats of six mean six arrivals at one door, so a booked slot is worth having.
- Moving in the week of 21 September avoids the university arrivals weekend.
Instruments are not just another box
A cello, a double bass, an electric piano, an amp or a drum kit is the most valuable thing in the van and the one most easily damaged. We carry them upright where the case is built for it, blanket the edges, strap them so nothing can shift, and load them last so they come out first rather than being buried behind a wardrobe.
Tell us what you are bringing when you ask for a quote, including the case type and whether it has wheels. A hard case and a soft case are different jobs, and a bass that will not go up a narrow stairwell needs knowing about before the day rather than on it.
A term that starts before everyone else's
RWCMD's 2026/27 autumn term runs from 21 September to 11 December 2026, the spring term from 4 January to 19 March 2027, and the summer term from 19 April to 25 June 2027. Cardiff University residence contracts start on 23 September, and its enrolment week does not begin until 28 September.
That gap is worth using. The weekend before 21 September is quieter on the roads and easier for booking a van than the last weekend of the month, when the universities arrive together. The College publishes its dates on its term dates page.
Moving out at the end of the year
The summer term ends on 25 June 2027, which lands in the same fortnight as Cardiff University's contract ends on 21 and 30 June. If you are moving out of a Cathays or Roath house then, book early: those two weeks are the busiest of the Cardiff moving year.
If your next place is not ready, the gap is what student storage moves covers, and the wider move-out picture is on our end of term page.
End of term student removals sets out the dates for every campus, and student removals from Cardiff to home covers the long journey with instruments aboard.
What an RWCMD move costs
A room's worth of boxes and a few bits usually lands between £85 to £150, and a full room of furniture and boxes between £130 to £220. Open-ended jobs can be charged hourly instead, at £45 an hour for one person and a van or £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum.
A large instrument does not change the price on its own, but it can change the van, because a double bass or a drum kit needs height and a flat floor rather than a load stacked to the roof. The full breakdown is on our prices page.
Where RWCMD students live
