Cardiff University's healthcare courses, other than Pharmacy and Optometry, are based at Heath Park, sharing the site with the University Hospital of Wales at CF14 4XN. The Cochrane Building is CF14 4YU and the Dental Hospital CF14 4XY, which has its own car park where spaces are limited and visitors and staff pay.
Healthcare students also move on a different calendar from everyone else. Contracts here start as early as 18 September and end as late as 11 August, so the Cardiff University arrivals weekend and the June exodus are not your dates.

A campus you cannot drive onto
Cardiff University is explicit that parking at Heath Park is limited to hospital patients, patient visitors and medical staff. It is a working hospital site first and a campus second, so there is no student drop-off area to aim a loaded van at, and the car parks nearest the Cochrane Building exist for the hospital.
In practice that is rarely a problem, because nobody moves into the campus. The move goes to your hall or your house, and the campus only matters for the walk you will do every day afterwards. The university sets out the restriction on its directions page.
The halls built around this campus
Two university residences are aimed at Heath Park students. Clodien House, run by Unite and holding 380 students in flats of four to six, is described by the university as ideally placed for Heath Park while still walkable to Cathays Park. University Hall is larger at 673 students and is a short walk or cycle from Heath Park, with a free weekday university bus to both campuses.
The parking rules differ sharply between them. Clodien House lists no car parking within a three mile radius unless it is in designated public parking spaces. University Hall has car parking at £195 for the year. If you are bringing a car as well as a van load, that difference decides which hall works for you.
Contracts that end in July and August
Healthcare contracts are longer than the standard ones because the courses are. Dental Hygiene and Therapy runs from 18 September 2026 to 4 August 2027. Nursing and Midwifery run from 23 September 2026 to 11 August 2027. Radiography and Imaging ends on 28 July 2027 and Physiotherapy on 7 July 2027.
So while most of Cardiff empties in the last fortnight of June, Heath Park students are still in their rooms. That makes moving out easier, not harder: vans are available, the streets are quieter and the student areas have already turned over. Book anyway, but you are not fighting the whole city for a slot.
The summer pattern for every campus is in end of term student removals. Heath Park students from overseas can start at international student removals.
Arriving five days before the rush
Dental Hygiene and Therapy contracts start on Friday 18 September 2026, five days before the main 23 September intake and well before enrolment week begins on 28 September. That is the quietest arrival date in the Cardiff calendar.
If your course starts then, take it. The roads are normal, the halls are not queueing and a van is easy to book. Everyone arriving on 23 September is sharing the road with every other residence in the city.
Placements, vacations and the room you still pay for
The university is clear that contract periods include times when you are paying rent but may not be staying in the room, such as vacations and placements. Healthcare courses send students out on placement for long stretches, which means the room sits empty while the rent runs.
It also warns that students on full year contracts may be asked to move to another room in the same residential area, usually in June or July, while maintenance is carried out. A room to room move is short, but it still needs a van and a slot. Every contract date is on the university's contract periods page.
What a Heath Park move costs
A room's worth of boxes and a few bits usually lands between £85 to £150, and a full room of furniture and boxes between £130 to £220. Open-ended jobs can be charged hourly instead, at £45 an hour for one person and a van or £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum.
Moving in July or August is often quicker than June, because the roads and the buildings are quieter. If there is a gap between your contract ending and the next one starting, our student storage moves page covers it. The full breakdown is on our prices page.
