Where you have a 45 minute unloading space, forgetting to register the vehicle can earn a parking fine. Where there is no university parking, the van has to find a legal stopping point on patrolled streets. And where the keys live somewhere else, the move needs two stops before anything reaches your room.
Contracts starting on 23 September 2026 need a booked arrival slot, and arrivals run from Wednesday 23 to Sunday 27 September. Enrolment week follows from 28 September and the autumn semester starts on 5 October. We move students in and out across all of it, from a car boot of boxes into Talybont to a full house share in Cathays.

Two stops before you reach your room
A surprising number of Cardiff University residences do not hand out their own keys. Aberconway Hall, Colum Hall, Hodge Hall and the Colum Road houses all collect keys from Aberdare Hall reception at CF10 3UP. Gordon Hall and the Village houses collect from Senghennydd Court. Roy Jenkins Hall collects from Cartwright Court.
For a move that means the van stops twice: once near the key collection point and once at the building itself. We plan that order before the day, and we keep someone with the van at the first stop so it is never left sitting on a patrolled street while you queue at reception.
The 45 minute unloading limit
At the Talybont residences, Cartwright Court and Roy Jenkins Hall, the university provides temporary parking for unloading only. It is limited to 45 minutes and one vehicle per student, and you give your vehicle registration when you collect your key to avoid a parking fine. After unloading, the vehicle has to move on to on-street parking nearby.
Forty five minutes is plenty with the van packed in the right order and two people carrying, and tight if boxes have to be dug out and the lift is busy. So we load your room last in and first out, and bring a second mover when the room is on an upper floor.
- Register the van's number plate at key collection, not just your family car.
- Have the room's boxes together at the back of the van so they come off in one run.
- Talybont's nearest public car park is on North Road, a 15 to 20 minute walk, so unloading inside the window matters.
Halls with no parking at all
Aberdare Hall, Aberconway Hall, Colum Hall, Gordon Hall and the Colum Road houses have no university parking. On-street parking nearby is limited and regularly patrolled, and parking in Queen Anne Square is not permitted. The university points drivers to the North Road car park, about a nine minute walk from Aberdare Hall, and to the NCP on Dumfries Place, about thirteen minutes from Gordon Hall.
Nobody wants to carry a room of boxes nine minutes from a car park. We work out the nearest legal stopping point for the van, keep the vehicle attended and moving as the university asks, and bring enough hands that the carry is done in as few trips as possible. The university keeps the current rules for each residence on its arrivals page.
Talybont and the plans next door
Talybont North, Gate, South and Court sit side by side in Gabalfa close to the A48, four residences sharing one set of approach roads on arrivals weekend. On 23 July 2026 the university unveiled plans for a six storey block of 665 student rooms on vacant land at Bevan Place, the former Brickyard Business Park next to Talybont, which would act as a new gateway to the residences from Excelsior Road.
It is only a proposal for now. The pre-application consultation ran from 20 July to 17 August 2026 and the scheme still needs full planning approval, so nothing changes for this year's arrivals. If it goes ahead, the site and the approach roads around Talybont will change during construction, and we will plan around that when it happens.
Contract end dates and the summer move out
Most contracts start on Wednesday 23 September 2026. The 40 week contract ends on Wednesday 30 June 2027, the 39 week contract on Monday 21 June, and Clodien House's 44 week contract on Wednesday 28 July. Full year contracts run to Friday 17 September 2027. Health courses run longer: Nursing and Midwifery contracts end on 11 August 2027 and Physiotherapy on 7 July.
You have to move out at the end of your contract, and the spring exam period does not finish until 18 June 2027, so late June is a crush of exams, packing and checkouts at once. Book the move out early. The full list is on the university's contract periods page.
End of term student removals covers the June crunch in detail, and student removals from Cardiff to home covers the long run back with a room's worth of boxes.
- Students on full year contracts may be asked to move to another room in the same residential area in June or July while maintenance is carried out.
- Arriving from overseas before your contract starts means booking somewhere else first, because the room will not be ready early.
From residences into a Cathays or Roath house share
Second year usually means a shared terrace in Cathays or Roath, a mile or so from the residences. The run is short, so the cost sits in the loading, the stairs and the parking at the house end, where permit bays and narrow terraces decide how close the van gets.
Housemates moving on the same day can share one van and split the cost, with several pickups and one drop. The general version of this service, for any student move in the city, is on our student moves page.
The whole halls-to-share move, from the inventory to the first night, is in moving from Cardiff halls to a student house. Students arriving from overseas start at international student removals.
What a Cardiff University move costs
A room's worth of boxes and a few bits usually lands between £85 to £150. A full room of furniture and boxes, one van and one trip, sits between £130 to £220. Open-ended jobs can be charged hourly instead, at £45 an hour for one person and a van or £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum.
An upper floor, a long carry from the nearest legal stopping point, or a second stop to collect keys all add time. The full breakdown is on our prices page.
