The complex sits in Gabalfa, north west of Cathays, and the university describes it as the largest of its residences. Talybont North houses 972 students, Talybont Gate 179, Talybont South 1,252 and Talybont Court 513, all in self-catered, en-suite flats. On a main arrivals day that is a lot of families, cars and vans aiming for the same few roads at once.
We move students into and out of all four blocks. The parts that decide how a Talybont move goes are where you collect the key, how long the van can stand while it unloads, and whether a car is allowed there at all. Each is covered block by block below, alongside the general Cardiff University page for the rest of the university's halls.
- Students across the four blocks
- 972 North, 179 Gate, 1,252 South, 513 Court
- Main arrivals key collection
- Talybont Social Centre, CF14 3AT
- Unloading
- 45 minutes in temporary parking
- Resident parking
- 130 spaces shared by North and Gate only
- Walk to Main Building
- 15 minutes from Court, 30 from Gate
- A room of boxes and a few bits
- £85 to £150
Which reception has your key
For contracts starting on 23 September 2026, students in Talybont North, Gate and South book an arrival slot and collect their key from the Talybont Social Centre, postcode CF14 3AT. Talybont Court students collect from Talybont Court reception, CF14 3UA, whatever date they arrive.
On any other contract start date there is no slot to book, and keys are collected between 10:00 and 16:00 on the first day of the contract. North and Gate use Southgate House reception, the main reception for those two blocks. South students switch to Talybont Court reception. If you cannot arrive by 16:00, the university asks you to contact it to arrange a late arrival.
- Main arrivals: book the slot first, then book the van to arrive just after it.
- Tell us which reception you are going to, so the van stops there first and then moves to your block.
- Arriving late in the day on a non-arrivals date means calling the residences office before 16:00.
Forty five minutes at the kerb
Every Talybont block offers temporary parking limited to 45 minutes. At North and Gate it covers key collection and unloading, one vehicle per student. At South and Court it is for unloading, and you give your vehicle registration when you collect the key to avoid a parking fine.
After that the vehicle has to go. The nearest public car park is on North Road, which the university puts at about 20 minutes' walk from North and Gate and about 15 from South and Court. That is a long way back to fetch a forgotten box, so we load your room in the order it comes off and bring a second mover when the flat is on an upper floor, which keeps the whole unload inside the window.
Most residents cannot bring a car
Talybont South and Talybont Court both list no car parking within a three mile radius unless it is in designated public parking spaces. Talybont North and Gate share 130 parking spaces between them, and at Gate the university lists car parking as a charge of £195 for the 40 week contract.
In practice that means most Talybont students arrive with everything in one trip and never have a car on site to ferry things back and forth. A van that brings the room in one run and then leaves is the simplest way to do it, and the same is true in June when the room goes back out again.
Shops close by, so bring less
The university lists a Tesco Express on North Road as the nearest shop and a Tesco Extra and Aldi on Excelsior Way as the nearest supermarkets, and names the Cardiff University Sports Training Village as its sports facility. Laundry is pay as you go, and there are no extra charges for utilities or the university internet.
With supermarkets that close, there is little point moving a year of cleaning products, tins and bulky kitchen basics across the country. Bring the room and the things you care about, and buy the rest after the move. It makes the van load smaller and the unload faster.
Moving out of Talybont in June
The standard 40 week contract at every Talybont block runs from 23 September 2026 to 30 June 2027. Talybont South also offers a 39 week contract that ends on 21 June 2027, and Talybont Court's three bedroom houses run on a full year contract. The university's spring exam period finishes on 18 June 2027, so the last fortnight of June is exams, packing and checkouts all at once across nearly 3,000 rooms.
Book the move out as early as you would a move in. Second year usually means a shared house in Cathays or Heath, and the university's own Talybont South page shows how far each is from the Main Building and Heath Park campus if you are weighing up where to live next.
The June pattern across all three universities is set out in end of term student removals, and the trip home afterwards in student removals from Cardiff to home. Cardiff Met students have their own page at Cardiff Met student removals.
What a Talybont move costs
A room's worth of boxes and a few bits usually lands between £85 to £150, and a full room of furniture and boxes, one van and one trip, between £130 to £220. Open-ended jobs can be charged hourly instead, at £45 an hour for one person and a van or £65 for two, with a 2 hour minimum.
A top floor flat, a stop at a different reception for the key, or a housemate collection on the same run all add time. The full breakdown is on our prices page, and the university lists every block's arrangements on its arrivals page.
